I greatly esteemed and appreciated Arthur’s teaching during supervision seminars at the Centro Studi. I remember his acute vision and the simplicity of his comments in getting to the intimate nucleus of the patient. I always remember his particular humanity; one time at a party he saw me looking a bit lost when I entered a gathering of a group of professionals, and he came and offered me a drink, making me feel both welcomed and nourished. He helped me a lot to understand the emotional states of others, through theory, metaphor and his experience, and well understood when to ‘leave me alone’ to make my own way in the work, like a mother who understands that her child needs to prove herself, giving me the feeling of being accompanied yet independent.
